How to Create Fillable Forms in Google Docs

Creating fillable forms in Google Docs can be a great way to gather information, conduct surveys, or streamline your data collection process. In this tutorial, I’ll walk you through the steps to create fillable forms using Google Docs' built-in features allowing for text boxes, dropdown lists, and checkboxes. Be sure to watch the video tutorial below!

Step 1: Access Google Docs

Begin by logging into your Google account and navigating to Google Docs. If you don't already have a Google account, you can easily create one for free.

Step 2: Open a New Blank Document

Once you're in Google Docs, open a new blank document by clicking on the "+" icon or selecting "Blank" from the template options.

Step 3: Insert Your Logo

If you have a logo or image you want to include in your form, go to the "Insert" menu, choose "Image," and upload your logo from your computer. Adjust the size and position of the logo as needed. Select the option to place the logo behind text and then select “Fix position on page” so you can grab and drag the logo wherever you want to place it on the Doc.

Step 4: Create Text Fields for User Input

To create text fields where users can input their information, insert a table from the "Insert" menu. Designate the appropriate number of cells for each field, such as name, date, and other relevant information. Then select the border lines you want to hide and set the border width to zero, or alternately change the border color to white to essentially “hide” them from view.

Step 5: Customize Dropdown Selections

For fields where users need to select options from a list, such as locations or categories, create drop-down menus. Insert another table and designate one row for labels and another for drop-down options. Place your cursor where you want to insert the Dropdown list and go to Insert > Dropdown and click to create a New Dropdown. Customize the options according to your requirements.

Step 6: Add Checkboxes for Multiple Choices

If your form requires users to select multiple options, such as checkboxes for different types of incidents, create a list of items, highlight the list and using the "Checklist" feature from the toolbar, select which checkbox option you prefer.

Step 7: Include an Open-Ended Text Box

To allow users to provide additional information or describe incidents in detail, insert a single-cell table for an open-ended text box. This gives users the flexibility to input text freely. Apply desired font formatting for user input.

Step 8: Formatting and Customization

Format your form elements to enhance clarity and readability. You can adjust font styles, sizes, and colors to make your form visually appealing and easy to navigate.

Step 9: Consider Limitations and Workarounds

Be aware of limitations, such as the inability to protect the document or save it as a template without Google Workspace. You may need to make copies of the form for each use or explore alternative solutions for document security, like converting the form to PDF or using Word, Google Forms, or Microsoft Forms.

Conclusion

Creating fillable forms in Google Docs offers a convenient way to collect data and streamline your workflow. By following these step-by-step instructions, you can design professional-looking forms that meet your specific needs. Experiment with different form elements and customization options to create forms that engage your audience effectively.
